Release withheld physiological/emotional patterns.
To express the fullness of your being.
What is 'Somatic' Breathwork?
Participants explore a deep resonant circular breath for about an hour, sometimes less (especially beginners).
The facilitator holds space, being present to your experience, and guiding you through any unfamiliar healing processes. Intervention is gentle if required to encourage breath to flow and make sure you stay in the process. Specific shiatsu techniques are sometimes used to assist release energetic holdings.
Often people end a session feeling relaxed, cleansed, opened, grounded, and as if a great weight has been removed.
This style is similar to that which many Tantric practitioners base their sessions around. One of the potential applications is to expand your feeling-range beyond the old patterned beliefs of shame, guilt & reduced empowerment (that restrict our physiologies). And to step into ever-greater embodied potential.
How does it work?
During the sessions, freeing the breath from its standard stop-start pattern allows deep psycho-physiological opening. This can lead to release of trapped energy, reduction in stress-levels, increase of natural breath capacity, and assistance in resolving old emotional restrictions (around things such as guilt, shame, lack of confidence, low vitality, sexual fear & closure, and even some phobias).
'Somatic' Breathwork is about 'Being & Feeling'. It is a powerfully effective journey into what may at first appear to be uncomfortable stillness & emptiness. Participants explore more of their full natural range of breath and energy than our culturally conditioned numbness often allows. As the process continues, various unusual physiological, transpersonal, and even ecstatic experiences may occur as the individual's deep inner healing mechanisms begin their work.
Strong expressive release sometimes happens spontaneously in this style, and is fine when it does - However, Somatic Breathwork encourages foundational healing rather than directly pursuing the 'massive release' model. In that way it is more similar to Hendricks' "Radiance Breathwork" (TM) than to Grof's classical "Holotropic" (TM) style.
Currently held at a Yoga studio in East Brunswick.

[I am also sometimes open to doing exchanges with other Breathwork practitioners, or bodyworkers.]

Who Isn't Suited To Breathwork?
If you don't like challenge: This is not necessarily for those new to challenging aspects of personal development. You may experience: muscle cramps, body-spasms, memories of past events, emotional or ecstatic release, Transpersonal states... Whilst many sessions are relatively sedate, and it is rare to experience even as many as 2 or 3 of these things, this can still be quite a journey! So if the idea that you might have some unusual experiences is particularly off-putting, then this work likely isn't your best path.
If your medical history is as follows: Sessions are not suitable for people on psychiatric medications, those with anxiety disorders or who experience panic attacks, schizophrenia, epilepsy, asthma, have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or heart-conditions, or are extremely physically run down. If you have any doubt about your suitability please contact me to discuss this.
If you only want the 'quick fix': Some people can benefit tremendously from Breathwork in 1, 2 or 3 sessions. But some take ten or more to have a major breakthrough. Some people do sessions once a week for a while. Some feel they need 2 or more weeks between sessions, to integrate the healing that has happened. We discuss your progress and you decide how many sessions you want to attend, and how often.
A standard group session lasts about three hours. It may start with a Medicine Wheel sharing circle where the participants speak about where they are right now in their lives and about where they want to be. Then normally there will be some grounding embodiment practice, followed by the breathwork itself.
The process is often supported by rhythmic drumming and is held in a ritual frame. Occasionally we also have live didgeridoo. These enhancements assist access of deeper brainwave states in which healing occurs more easily. At the end of the breath-practice will be at least fifteen minutes of still & silent integration time, and then a debrief. Finally there's a significant mutual check-in period. (And spontaneous witnessing and mutual support if anyone needs it.)
As with other aspects of the Evolving Man work, Breathwork is another great opportunity to deepen one's sense of self in the company of others - being real, and supporting each other in simple yet potent ritual space.
